12-step program to create an organic lawn
There is no "4-step" plan as the synthetic companies promote, but a 12 step program avoiding chemicals, is healthier for your lawn, your family, and your planet.
It's easy. Here's how:
- Go "cold turkey" as soon as possible.
- Always get soil tested prior to treating with fertilizers.
- Top dress lawns with compost.
- Apply limestone or gypsum if soil calcium is not 7x higher than the magnesium.
- Over seed lawn in spring or fall with appropriate grass seed.
- Brew compost tea and apply at least once a month.
- Mow lawn higher and leave grass clippings on lawn.
- Use clover in your lawn. Each lawn should have at least 5% clover to fix nitrogen in the soil.
- Apply corn gluten in spring (prior to blooming) as a weed controller.
- Apply organic fertilizer in early summer or autumn.
- Water lawn as infrequently and deeply as possible avoiding run off.
- Clean up and rake lawn prior to winter.
