12-step program to create an organic lawn

There is no "4-step" plan as the synthetic companies promote, but a 12 step program avoiding chemicals, is healthier for your lawn, your family, and your planet.

It's easy. Here's how:

  1. Go "cold turkey" as soon as possible.
  2. Always get soil tested prior to treating with fertilizers.
  3. Top dress lawns with compost.
  4. Apply limestone or gypsum if soil calcium is not 7x higher than the magnesium.
  5. Over seed lawn in spring or fall with appropriate grass seed.
  6. Brew compost tea and apply at least once a month.
  7. Mow lawn higher and leave grass clippings on lawn.
  8. Use clover in your lawn. Each lawn should have at least 5% clover to fix nitrogen in the soil.
  9. Apply corn gluten in spring (prior to blooming) as a weed controller.
  10. Apply organic fertilizer in early summer or autumn.
  11. Water lawn as infrequently and deeply as possible avoiding run off.
  12. Clean up and rake lawn prior to winter.
